Week 1 - Contemporary Teachers and Students

You as a contemporary teacher?

To what extent is it reasonable to conclude that if you are not experiencing positive or negative emotions about the materials and activities in any learning experience, that you are potentially disinterested or not motivated? Discuss in relation to your first emotional response to the nature of this unit.

It is very reasonable to conclude that if one has no experience of positive or negative emotions during a course of study, that they may become disinterested or unmotivated. I am looking forward to the learnings that will be presented in this unit, however, I am the kind of learner that will zone out if the content being delivered is too complicated or not delivered succinctly. I tend to struggle in auditory learning, so hearing someone talk about the same subject for more than an hour can be very draining.

Elaborate on your emotions on engaging further with this unit? Positive, negative. Indifferent?

My emotions at the moment are hopeful, as this first lecture was for less than an hour, and although I did admittedly lose focus a few times, there was still interesting concepts delivered throughout the lecture. I hope to continue having positive experiences in this unit, as I don't want to fall behind due to a lack of motivation.

To what extent do you have the commitment to actively interrogate your emotions, and your beliefs about creative pedagogy (that extends beyond the mere delivery of information to your learners)? How might you be challenged to engage as you enter this unit?

I work as a teacher aide and am always seeing new pedagogies exploring creative ways of learning. It is exciting to see ways of learning that may be assisting more students than a teacher realises. I intend to be a teacher that inspires my students in the future so I will always fight against my unmotivated self in order to be a better influence on my future students. The greatest challenges I will probably be facing in this unit will be the deadlines, especially for the weekly tasks. I will make a great attempt to get everything done on time (hence my writing week one blog posts on Sunday!)

Identify your present values and beliefs about ICT in the classroom. Keep it brief and focused.

I believe that used in the appropriate manner and at the right times, ICT can be an exceptional asset. In saying this, there are situations that I have observed in classrooms, where students can do better work without technology taunting them with distractions.

Your approach to teaching and learning

My approach to teaching and learning would be that of inclusion. Every student deserves a chance to complete their work to the best of their abilities, regardless of their ethnicity, disabilities or socio-economic backgrounds.

Identify any challenges to your current values and beliefs as you enter this unit?

At this stage of the unit, I do not have any challenges to my current values and beliefs. Technology is an integral part of our society. There are positive and negative ways of using technology, and as long as we guide our students down the correct path, they should succeed.

What experience do you have with ICT in the classroom?

I am aware of multiple engagement sites such as blooket, kahoot, quizziz, quizlet and gimkit. These sites create a more exciting learning environment for students, when not overused. I am also familiar with the Microsoft office suite, using Teams and OneNote to communicate with students during and outside of the class.
